Shark week. A visit from Aunt Flow. Moon sickness.

Call it what you want, but if you are a women past puberty you’ll be familiar with this monthly affliction.

For those of you looking to track your period, either looking to get pregnant, track your birth control intake or simply to get familiar with your body, this might just be the app for you.

  1. Overview

Flo is an app that is free on the App store and the Google Play store that allows you to track your whole cycle. You input your cycle settings (cycle length, period length) and it will automatically predict your periods for you. Sometimes shark week can vary, so you can go and adjust it if the prediction is off. You can also log your daily symptoms, to help you find patterns of behavior during each part of your cycle. There are also graphs you can use to view these patterns as well. If connected to Apple Health, this app will carry over the step data to see how active you are. You can set reminders on this app to remind you to take your oral contraceptive, or if you’re looking to conceive there is also a pregnancy mode. Finally, the app dishes out advice/information based on your daily input.

      2. Daily Log

The daily log is a way to track your symptoms every day. Categories include: Lifestyle- where you can track weight, sleep, nutrition, steps, distance, workouts, and water intake; Sex and Sex drive- where you can track if you had protected/unprotected sex, high sex drive, and/or masturbation; Mood- where you can track if you are normal, happy, sad, frisky, mood swings, angry, or panicky; Log symptoms- where you can put if you had cramps, tender breasts, headache, acne, backache, nausea, fatigue, or bloating; Vaginal discharge; and Other- like travel, stress, disease or injury.

From the information you include here, Flo will make predictions and give you advice.

     3. Main Screen

The main screen is where you can see the current day of your cycle and the chance you have of getting pregnant. It also shows symbols of the symptoms you input for that day. You can also see when your next period is predicted to happen.

    4. Privacy

For those of you who don’t want this personal information to fall into the wrong hands, there is a setting on this to set up an access code to prevent anyone else but you from getting in.

    5. Birth Control Reminders

I have my birth control reminders set for every day at 9:30 PM. They will keep sending you reminders until you go into the app and mark that you’ve taken it on time. Unfortunately, there’s no kind of alarm associated with this- it just sends you a text message. However, this is useful if you’ve accidentally turned off your birth control alarm. The only real problem I seem to have with this app is the limited cycle settings. The cycle length only goes up to 70 days, and due to the type of birth control I take, my cycle is 90 days long, causing the period predictions to not be accurate. I contacted support and they said they are currently working on incorporating more types of birth control and if I manually enter in my periods, the app will adjust.

BOTTOM LINE: Would I recommend?

I would recommend this to all ladies, whether they are trying to get pregnant, on birth control or not. Being familiar with your body is always useful, especially if you’re trying to become healthier.

I will continue using this app, in conjunction with Jawbone UP, everyday. It is super quick and easy to use.

The April Challenge/ McAlister’s Deli Review

Happy April, Valued Fools.

After checking my budget for March, I discovered that I spent a total of $371 on fast food. Currently, I am trying to save money for vacation and moving out so it seemed essential to make some cut backs. Add that to the fact that I’m trying to be healthier and it’s a no-brainer that fast food needs to be cut. Drastically.

So me and Mr. D have made it our goal this month to avoid fast food at all costs. Since we are weak, weak souls, we decided to give ourselves a cheat restaurant- okay, fine, TWO cheat restaurants, for our mental health’s sake. One is the Holy Grail itself: Skyline (Which I have reviewed before. Check it out here:

And another one of my favorite fast food places: McAlister’s Deli, which I will review here today.

  1. Summary

You know those restaurants/ fast food places that you go to just to get the same thing every time? This is NOT one of those places. This is one of those places that does everything and does everything well. All kinds of salads, soups, sandwiches, and potatoes in all kinds of combinations. You can get a full entree with a side (Mac and Cheese, chips, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, fruit, veggies, etc) OR you can choose the Choose 2 and get a half size of two of the following (Sandwich, spud, soup or salad.) On top of that, they have a variety of delicious flavored teas and lemonades. They also have a deal going on for tea-lovers like me where when you buy 9 teas you get the 10th free. You can fill out a survey on your receipt and get a free cookie on your next visit as well.

There are tons of locations in North America, mostly centralized in the southeast. You can choose to sit down, take it to go, or order ahead online or on the phone. Everyone who works here is really nice and polite and my order has never been wrong. It can be a a bit pricey but you totally get what you pay for. If you’re looking to eat healthy/vegan/vegetarian this is the place to go. You could go here everyday and never get bored.

    2. April 2nd Meal

My first visit this month was on April Second and I ordered one of their current featured item: The Black Cherry Chicken Salad. It consisted of Spinach, grilled chicken, bacon, balsamic red onions, dried cherries, candied pecans, Gorgonzola and black cherry vinaigrette, but I ordered it without the Gorgonzola cuz that shiz nasty (If you don’t like bleu cheese, you wont be a fan of this either.) This is my favorite out of all the meals I’ve tried so far (which is saying ALOT.) Usually I pick the Choose 2 but I got the full salad this time. It was about as big as my head!! I ate the whole thing. SO delicious. I combined it with the black cherry vinaigrette that was the perfect balance of sweet and tart. The candied pecans gave it a nice crunch which paired beautifully with the crisp spinach and onion and chewy dried cherries. I don’t typically like my chicken grilled but here, soaked in the vinaigrette and mixed with the greens, it was absolute perfection.

Mr. D had the French Dip, and substituted the Swiss cheese for pepper jack. For those of you who aren’t familiar a French dip is roast beef on a sub, that comes with a Au Jus sauce to dip it in. He loves McAlister’s french dip and orders it all the time- and he used to be the General Manager of Arby’s so he knows a good french dip when he sees one. (Side Note: I love Arby’s french dip but McAlister’s is far superior.) For his side, he got the mac and cheese which was not great. It looked good (comparable to Stouffer’s) but it was room temperature, and very bland.

BOTTOM LINE: I will continue going back a lot, especially for the month of April.

I would recommend it to anyone in any walk of life, especially those looking to eat healthy/vegan/vegetarian.

General Restaurant Rating: 9/10 Would eat again.

Rae’s Meal Rating: 10/10 Would eat again

Mr. D’s Meal Rating: 10/10 Would eat again (French Dip) and 3/10 Pass (Mac and Cheese)

Like what you read? Leave a comment or suggestion below! What’s your favorite restaurant? What’s your favorite thing to eat here? What restaurant would you like me to review next?

Also, April is far from over and so is this challenge, so look forward to more updates!

Spring Cleaning: A Journey

Spring is in the air…

And so is dust.

Time to break out the yellow rubber gloves, and finally unpack those boxes you’ve had in your garage since you moved in. If you are an organizational freak, like me, or if you’re a lazy sack of shit, also like me (What can I say? I’m complex) here’s a few spring cleaning tips to get you going.

  1. Make a list of what you want to tackle

You obviously can’t get to everything in one day so prioritizing is a must. Make a plan for the whole week if you have to. Personally, I would start with picking clothes up and starting laundry, because if you have a lot of clothes, or are washing for more than one person, this could take all day. Then pick up all the trash and throw that out. After that I would focus on dusting, cleaning surfaces and furniture, and then mopping/sweeping/vacuuming the floors. After that you get to the fun part: Organizing.

      2. Make a list of supplies

The last thing you want to do is go into such a monumental task unprepared. If you have a Costco or Sams Club membership, it is a great place to go to get cleaning supplies in bulk (Unfortunately, you will need them again in the future.) Otherwise, your nearest Walmart would do. Some of my go to supplies are: The Swiffer/ Swiffer WetJet for sweeping/mopping, Swiffer Duster for dusting, Tide laundry PODS for detergent and sofener, Clorox disinfectant wipes for cleaning counter tops, Fabreeze Heavy duty for whatever scents you may run into, Windex for glass, Compressed Air Duster for cleaning electronics, aaand a little bit of vinegar for the heavy duty or bad smelling stains.

      3. Don’t Try to do it all at Once

Cleaning is way less intimidating if you do it in sections. How you divide it up is up to you. You could do it by room, or split each room into quadrants. The most important thing is: once you start something, keep going until you finish it! I have a lot of problems with starting 10 different projects and not finishing anything. SO, although those floors are distractingly dirty, finish putting your clothes away first.

       4. Make it as Pleasant as Possible

Trying to get clean and organized sucks, there’s no arguing with that. However, there are some things you can do in order to avoid a completely unpleasant experience. Try throwing some tunes on, things always pass by quicker when you have something to jam to. Keep the house at a comfortable temperature. There is nothing more unmotivating then your house being freezing cold or boiling hot. It is spring now, so pop open some doors and windows or turn on the fans. Also, make sure to wear something comfortable that you wouldn’t mind getting ruined.

      5. Look for Life Hacks

I’m all about things that make my life easier. Sometimes finding those things is as simple as checking Pinterest. If you don’t have an account, I highly suggest getting one. It is free and the ideas are limitless. Follow the link to get set up today: or download in the app store.

     6. Have a Place for Everything

No matter how hard you try, there’s no way you’ll ever be organized if you have more stuff than places to put that stuff. The key aspect of organization is to have a place for everything, and have everything in its place. My go to spot for Organizers is the Container Store, but it can get a bit pricey there. For people on a smaller budget, Walmart and Target should have what you need as well. When trying to decide on what to organize, focus on your problem areas: Can you never find your shoes? Get a shoe tree; Do you have a jumbled drawer full of crap? Get a drawer organizer; if you don’t have a closet and your clothes don’t have a place or always get wrinkly, get a clothing rack; Once you establish a place for everything, you’d be surprised to find how easy it is to keep things clean.

(You can also find ones with 3 hampers underneath so there’s a place to sort and store your dirty clothes)

My Journey is just beginning,  but I will not suffer in silence! I’ll keep you updated on my struggles, and you can update me with yours in the comments below! I should also mention that I am not paid/ sponsored by any of these brands/stores, these are just the brands/stores that I have had great experiences with. If you have any tips or suggestions, leave those in the comments as well. Happy Cleaning!

Well it is finally springtime in Cincinnati. Everyone around knows this could mean extreme joy as the sun burns bright above; the breeze wafting through the honeysuckles bringing about sweet smells into the air; or crushing disappointment as, overnight, the temperature plummets and you wake up to find your car covered in snow. It’s a coin flip really. Not to mention the mood swings and allergies that accompany the sporadic weather. It has taught me one thing though, Valued Reader, to seize the moment! If you see the sun, run outside! Quit your job, ditch your kids. Who needs money, not I! (But if you have any left over income feel free to donate to my GoFundMe whenever you can*) Don’t fret if the sky decides to cry, though. You still have Spring Cleaning to do!

  1. Your One and Only ❤

2. No not Planet of the Apes- the other one

3. This week I will be attending a restaurant with Notorious picky eater… Mr. D. This will be his first time Dewey’s Pizza.

*In all serious though folks, I do have a family member who is in need of your help. Recently Tara Dickman had a stroke that affected 75% of her brain. She needed to have part of her skill removed due to the swelling of her brain. They are trying to get her into RIC, the best stroke rehab facility in the country. It’s in Chicago so in addition to her treatment, she needs money for travel as well. If any of you have even a dollar to contribute, any thing would help. She is very young and has a long life ahead of her! Here is a link to her GoFundMe account:

The Leprechaun

Ahh Saint Patrick’s Day. To the Irish- A celebration of culture and religion. To Americans- Also a celebration of culture and religion… if by culture you mean “wearing all green” and by religion you mean “worshiping alcohol”.

Good morning Valued Reader. Today we will wrap up our Paddy’s day reviews with the most iconic Paddy’s day movie of all time. You guessed it: The Leprechaun.

**Spoilers Ahead**

  1. The Cast

This is one of those movies that you would assume would have a nobody cast. Even if you’ve seen it before, I guarantee you didn’t remember that freakin’ Jennifer Anniston was in it! Yes, that Jennifer Anniston, in all of her pre-Friends glory. Also, Warwick Davis, well known for his roles as the main Ewok AND the body of Yoda (sometimes) in Star Wars; and  Filius Flitwick AND Griphook in the Harry Potter films. He had a few small roles in well known films and TV  like The Chronicles of Narnia and Doctor Who and played a lot of dwarf roles as well (The troubles of being a little person in Hollywood.) Leprechaun evidently paid him well because he was in Leprechaun 2, Leprechaun 3, Leprechaun 4: In Space, Leprechaun in the Hood, and last but certainly not least, Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood. I swear to you these are all very real.  (ATTENTION-SLUT WARNING: Comment if you want me to review them 😉 ) But I digress, other characters include people who haven’t aged as well as Jennifer Aniston like Ken Olant and Mark Holton. The characters in this give a pretty decent performance. Not very memorable but they’re trying at least. They’re not given very good material so even the best actor couldn’t make their line’s sound any less goofy. Warwick Davis steals the show in every frame he is in.

2. The Plot

The plot was very disappointing. Not that I was expecting a cinematic masterpiece or anything but I did imagine it to be… Less boring. I imagined this to be cheesy and over the top. Like Evil Dead if it had way less gore and was all around a inferior movie. There just wasn’t enough going on to hold my attention. No moments that were so bad you had to laugh, they were just plain bad. There was a side plot about this older mentally challanged man and a kid (who were hired to paint Jennifer Aniston and her dad’s house but end up hanging out with them the whole movie for some reason) when they find the leprechaun’s gold and the kid mentions the older guy can now get an operation to fix his brain. Um, heavy, much?  This does not match the cheesy campy tone of the movie at. all. Maybe it was supposed to be a comedic moment. It definitely did not come off that way. Then later the kid admitted that he knew there was no operation to fix this man’s brain. THEN WHY WOULD HE BRING IT UP IN THE FIRST PLACE? Just to get his hopes up. This is a very odd moment, never to be discussed again.

Basically the whole thing starts out with two Irish sterotypes who we don’t spend any time with before they get axed. The Irishman had just returned back to America from Ireland and tells his wife he managed to capture a Leprechaun and steal his gold. Pretty much as soon as he finishes his sentence, his wife is already being pushed down the stairs by the Leprechaun who has hunted them down. So the husband manages to trap him in a crate with a four leaf clover placed on top of it (Which is a Leprechaun’s only weakness, apparently.) Then, just as he is about to light it on fire, he… has a heart attack? From the Leprechaun’s magic? I’m not 100% sure, instructions were not clear. So fast forward, Jennifer Aniston and her Dad are moving into said house, with the Leprechaun and gold still hidden inside. Nathan (Jennifer’s love interest), his brother Alex (The kid I had mentioned before), and Ozzie (The mentally-challenged man I mentioned before) are hired to fix up the house and end up chilling for the rest of the movie. Not sure why, but I guess they’re friends now. One of a Leprechaun’s powers in this movie is their ability to perfectly mock any voice. Usually a young child’s. Not sure if this is apart of the original lore. I guess I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. So the Leprechaun makes his voice sound like a child’s and pleads to Ozzie to let him out of the crate. Ozzie doesn’t but accidentally knocks the clover off of the crate and the Leprechaun is able to burst free. Ozzie tries to convince the others he has seen a Leprechaun but they, understandably, don’t believe him. They then proceed to make fun of how dumb this mentally-challanged man is. Charming. So almost immediately after, Ozzie spots a rainbow and follows it to the end to get the Leprechaun’s gold. Ozzie tries to check its authenticity by biting it but accidentally swallows it. So they leave it at a pawn shop to get it appraised. The leprechaun then kills the Pawn-shop owner (not sure why- he wasn’t the one who stole his gold.) After a good amount of time with the Leprechaun chasing the main characters around, attempting to kill them, Ozzie and Alex FINALLY admit that they, indeed, have had the gold THIS WHOLE TIME. (But of course they don’t tell them about the piece he swallowed. Of course.) So they give the Leprechaun his gold back and go to a nursing home where they believe O’Grady, the original owner of the house, to be at. (Apparently he was not dead. Convenient.) The Leprechaun pretends to be him at first (Because he realizes he was missing a piece of gold- Thanks Ozzie) but Aniston runs into the elevator and finds O’Grady hanging at the top of the elevator within an inch of his life. He reveals that the only way to kill a Leprechaun is with a four leaf clover. They run back to the house and find one. Alex attaches it to a wad of gum and slingshots it into the Leprechaun’s mouth, uttering the best line of this film, perhaps one of the best lines of all time: “Fuck you, Lucky Charms!” He falls into a well. Climbs out. And is pushed back into the well and set on fire. He still lives obviously. There’s like 12 sequels.

3. Final Verdict

Although it seems entertaining, there are a lot of slow parts in between. It’s much more entertaining just to read the plot summary. Or this review 😉 Though it is seen as a Paddy’s day classic, there are much better movies to watch. Like Boondock Saints or Luck of The Irish.

Skyline Chili

Happy Spring Valued Reader!

Quick side note before we begin: If any of you are nearby the Cincinnati, OH area and enjoy chili dogs and root bear floats, make sure to check out the Rootbeer Stand in Sharonville. Yesterday they reopened for their 60th season! So Happy Anniversary to them! Support small businesses, people. It’s the most delicious way to stick it to Big Brother and his Corporate Kin.

Anyway, I got off on a bit of a Tuesday Tangent, so I’ll just post the link to their website and be done with it:

What we will actually be reviewing today, on our First Edition of The Nom Nom Diaries, will be another local favorite: Skyline Chili.

Not No Ordinary Chili.

For those of you who are not familiar with Cincinnati-Style chili, I will warn you right now this ain’t no Chili Con Carne. Originating from immigrants from the Macedonian region, Cincinnati Chili can be described as having a “soup-like” consistency. Ingredients include ground beef, stock, tomato paste, cinnamon, other Mediterranean spices and sometimes chocolate. This chili is typically serviced with spaghetti and cheese as a “Three-way” (Sometimes onion and/or beans for a “Four-Way” or “Five-Way”) or on a hotdog with cheese as a cheese coney (Sometimes mustard and onion, if you have any taste). Now out of these Cincinnati-Chili Style places there is a fierce rivalry between Skyline Chili and Goldstar Chili. Families have been destroyed  from this rivalry; children estranged; marriages ripped apart. But of these two, In my unbiased opinion, I can confidently say that Skyline reigns supreme, and anyone who prefers Gold Star is a big fat loser.

Skyline offers other treats like, the 3-way baked potato, chili cheese fries and chilitos (which is a version of a burrito.) The reason I chose this restaurant (besides the fact I’ve gone here about once a week for my entire life) for my St. Patrick’s Day review is because every year, it is a tradition to go to Skyline and get a Green-Way. If you can’t guess, a Green-Way is simply a 3-Way with the noodles dyed green.skyline.PNG

(Green-Way pictured.)

Picture this…

As soon as you walk into Skyline you feel a family vibe. An eatery that sits in that sweet-spot between upscale restaurant and fast-food. You seat yourself and a waitress promptly brings you a bowl of oyster crackers to start your meal. If you’re adventurous, you take a bottle of hot sauce and create “Fire bombs” by dripping it onto the crackers and tossing them down the hatch. You order the Green-Way. The waitress grimaces. Even some of the most  experienced Skyliners shy away from the once-a-year emerald special. But not you. You got spunk, kid. You take a bite. You cry. Can’t handle the deliciousness. The expertly-fluffed Wisconsin cheddar causes you to rethink your life. How much time have you spent not eating Skyline in the past? What a waste. You cry harder. The tears mingle with the chili. No matter, nothing can ruin this meal. As you consume the Skyline. The Skyline starts to consume you…

Doesn’t that sound wonderful?

Unfortunately for those not close-by, Skyline and other Cincinnati-Style Chili is hard to find outside Cincinnati, with one of the exceptions being a couple in Florida. It can be considered a bit pricey compared to fast-food but I personally believe Skyline is much more than a fast-food joint. It’s got high-quality ingredients, high-quality staff and high-quality principles.

BOTTOM LINE: Will continue going back, probably once a week for the rest of my life (It’s physically impossible to get sick of it)

Will recommend to everyone, near or far (Travel a million miles if you have to, your life is not complete without it.)

Skyline will forever be, to me and any other Cincinnatian who knows anything, a 10/10, would eat again.

Jawbone UP

I know it’s about 3 and a half months after New Years so most of you have probably gave up on your resolution to go to the gym. But for those of you that haven’t, or would like to focus on other aspects of your health such as: steps, mood, sleep and meals- this App is the best one I’ve seen so far.

1. Overview

Available in the App Store and Google Play for free. Compatible for Apple watch and also makes it’s own wearable device you can purchase starting at $20. On the home screen it will display 3 bars- one for sleep, one for your step count and one for your meal score. It recommends tips based on your fitness patterns daily. This home page also displays a timeline of the data you’ve entered. There’s a plus sign at the bottom of the screen where you can easily add data about your sleep, diet, weight, mood, and workouts. There is a menu where you can set goals, examine your trends, find friends, challenge others to duels, connect with other apps and edit your profile.

2.Step Tracking

One of the things I really like about it, is that it hooks up to the Health App that is already on iPhones. This Health App runs in the background, so your steps will be counted without the app being open. This data automatically transfers to UP, making counting your steps an automatic breeze.

3. Meal Tracking

The meal tracking is not perfect but the best I’ve seen so far. It connects to FourSquare so it contains the menu’s/ nutrition data of most of the restaurants in the area. Food is typically easy to find by searching (Entering less words and leaving off the brand name makes the search come out better). It gives you a daily meal score on a scale out of 10. It highlights nutrition categories you can eat as much as you want of (like fiber and unsaturated fat), things you can eat in moderation (like carbs and protein), and things you should eat as little as possible (like sugar, saturated fats, sodium, and cholesterol). It shows you the calories eaten, and the estimated calories you’ll burn. Another neat feature is that you can take a picture of a food’s bar code to pull up the nutrition facts.

4. Sleep tracking

Using this App allows you to track sleep with ease. Simply enter in the time you went to bed and the time you woke up.

5. Workout Tracking

The workout logging is perfect super easy to use because of it’s simplicity. Enter the type of workout (Weights, eliptical, a sport, etc), the intensity of your workout, the start time and the duration.

6. Mood Tracking

This is very simplistic and more focused toward tracking your energy levels than tracking your mood. However, this information is still important when looking at your overall health.

BOTTOM LINE: Would I recommend?

I would recommend this to anyone who want’s to track all aspects of their health. There are simpler apps if you just want to track just your steps or mood or sleep. But this is the best I’ve seen for overall and for food tracking. I cant’t speak much for the android app but the iPhone App is very smooth and convenient.
